This latest act is part of a series of violent acts against politicians. More than 20 candidates have been murdered during the current election period in Mexico. Cabrera himself was already under heightened protection after a member of his team was found murdered. Another candidate from the same list, Aníbal Zúñiga Cortes, was found murdered in his car along with his wife. The upcoming presidential, parliamentary and regional elections, in which over 20,000 offices will be newly occupied, are overshadowed by a wave of violence, primarily suspected to be from criminal groups.
Historic Elections Ahead
Despite the frightening incidents, Mexicans are looking forward to historic elections: For the first time the country could elect a female president. Claudia Sheinbaum, the leading candidate, advocates for social programs and combating crime and encourages the women of the country. Her competitor, Xochitl Galvez, promises a tougher approach in the fight against organized crime. The only male candidate in the race, Jorge Alvarez Maynez, is meanwhile lagging in the polls. Nearly 100 million registered voters are called upon to cast their vote on Election Sunday, in one of the largest elections Mexico has ever experienced.
