A groundbreaking ruling has rocked electric car manufacturer Tesla. A jury in the U.S. state of Florida has ordered the company to pay a total of $243 million in compensation - as a result of a fatal accident that occurred in April 2019.

The Background of the Accident

At that time, a Tesla Model S with an activated autopilot crashed into a Chevrolet parked at the side of the road. The occupants of the parked vehicle, a young couple, were standing next to their car. A 22-year-old woman was killed in the accident, and her boyfriend was seriously injured. Tesla now faces not only high costs but also far-reaching legal consequences. The accident occurred when the Tesla driver drove his car across a stop sign and a red traffic light at an intersection at about 100 km/h without braking, before the collision occurred. The driver later stated that he had reached for a fallen cell phone at the time. He said he was not alerted by the vehicle system, although the situation was critical. The plaintiffs argued that Tesla knowingly allowed the use of the autopilot outside its intended areas of use such as highways, without adequately warning or restricting drivers.

Tesla Faces More Than 300 Million Dollars in Fines

The jury awarded the deceased's family and the injured a total of $129 million in damages, of which Tesla must bear 33 percent. In addition, there are $200 million in punitive damages, which the company is supposed to take over completely. Interestingly, the driver of the Tesla was found to be 67 percent responsible for the accident, but since no charges were filed against him, this share remains uncovered.
