This latest act is part of a series of violent incidents against politicians. More than 20 candidates were murdered during the current election period in Mexico. Cabrera himself was already under increased protection after a member of his team was found murdered. Another candidate on the same list, Aníbal Zúñiga Cortes, was found murdered in his car along with his wife. The upcoming presidential, parliamentary, and regional elections, in which over 20,000 offices will be re-occupied, are overshadowed by a wave of violence, mainly suspected to be carried out by criminal groups.
Historic Elections Ahead
Despite the shocking incidents, Mexicans look forward to historic elections: For the first time, the country could elect a female president. Claudia Sheinbaum, the leading candidate, advocates for social programs and combating crime, and encourages the women of the country. Her competitor, Xochitl Galvez, promises a tougher approach in the fight against organized crime. The only male candidate in the race, Jorge Alvarez Maynez, is meanwhile lagging behind in the polls. Almost 100 million registered voters are called upon to cast their vote on election Sunday, in one of the largest elections Mexico has ever experienced.
