With the publication of their National Security Strategy, the US government has triggered a political earthquake in Europe. While countries like China or Russia are mentioned in the usual sharp tone, the clearest criticism this time hits the European Union.
The USA complains about weak European economies, a failed migration policy, and even sees the transatlantic partnership in danger. From Washington, it is said that the "resistance" against the EU within Europe must be strengthened - a statement that provokes strong reactions. But now a controversial revelation comes to light: According to the American specialist portal "Defense One", there exists, alongside the public version of the security strategy, a much longer, strictly confidential version. In this, concrete measures are described on how the EU could be weakened. Even the published version draws a clear line between individual European states and the EU as an institution. In the confidential long version, it should become even clearer. According to the report, the USA wants to focus its cooperation in the future "on a few countries with like-minded current governments and movements". Named are Austria, Hungary, Italy, and Poland. Closer cooperation should be sought with these states - apparently with the aim of politically drawing them away from the EU.
