The controversial statement puts Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian in a difficult position. In an interview with TV host Tucker Carlson, he tried to defuse the situation. "These fatwas are not directed against specific individuals and have nothing to do with my government or the Supreme Leader,” Pezeshkian emphasized.

However, not everyone in Iran follows this line. Other influential clerics have supported the calls for assassination, further stoking the tensions.

Symbolic provocations exacerbate the situation

While Pezeshkian is trying to calm things down, other actors in the country are escalating the situation. Mehdi Mohammadi, an advisor to the Speaker of Parliament, posted a picture on Instagram on Saturday showing Israel - with two nuclear mushrooms visible above it. The depiction suggests a nuclear explosion and is clearly meant to provoke. Iran officially maintains it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons. However, tensions between Tehran and Washington remain high. In June, the U.S. attacked Iranian nuclear facilities, causing significant damage. This action has further strained the already tense relationship between the two countries.
