Deadly Avalanche Claims Winter Sports Star
At around 12:15 pm, a disastrous accident occurred on the eastern side of Hockuchriz, at an altitude of approximately 2400 meters. Kestenholz was traveling with a companion when, for reasons yet to be determined, an avalanche was triggered. The mass of snow swept away the 50-year-old and buried him. His companion, who remained unharmed, immediately raised the alarm. Rescue teams frantically searched for the extreme sportsman. Kestenholz was eventually found and airlifted to the hospital in Visp, later transferred to Sion - but all help came too late. He succumbed to his severe injuries.
