The nocturnal landing marks the beginning of a broader European military presence. Additional troops from several NATO countries, including France, the Netherlands and Great Britain, are on their way. The deployment is under European leadership and deliberately outside of NATO command structures in the USA - a political signal to Washington.
From the USA's perspective, Greenland is of enormous strategic importance. The island is considered a key region for missile defense, Arctic security and access to resources. Trump had repeatedly stated that a Greenland outside of American control was "unacceptable" to him. However, Greenland's government clearly rejected these plans.
The only result of the summit was the establishment of a joint working group, which is to search for compromises. Whether this can defuse the tensions is open. What is clear, however, is that the power struggle over Greenland has reached a new level of escalation - both politically and militarily.
